Reading Comics is a genuinely unique animal. We may have seen similar books (Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics) or publications (The Comics Journal), and comics are routinely discussed in the mainstream media these days, but what Wolk attempts (and achieves) is something heretofore untried: the marriage of the best of academic and literary criticism with the healthy and extensive treatment of comics fandom.
