We just found out today that we may have just made an accidental drug deal at the produce market. Turns out the slang for marijuana in Turkish is the same as in English—’grass’. We asked one of the guys at a stall that was selling village-looking plants where we could find some ‘grass’. He said, “come back next week and I’ll have some. How much do you need?” When I gestured an amount that seemed reasonable when talking about hay, he looked shocked and said, “Çok çok” (That’s so much!) We were like, it doesn’t seem like very much. So we walked away, pleased with ourselves that we were such proactive rabbit parents. About 2 blocks away from home I wondered, “Do you think that ‘saman’ could be a slang word for pot?” We joked about it for a couple of minutes and then forgot about it until today when our friend, Mehmet came over and we asked him. He assured us that we were going to be in possession of about a kilo of marijuana next weekend. Shit! I am not going to the market next weekend. I’m envisioning all sorts of scenes from “Midnight Express”. We’ll have Mehmet go and explain the mix-up if it indeed happens. Along with the syringes we were going to buy to feed the bunny milk in case it was weaned too early, we wouldn’t have a leg to stand on.
