Chippendale has described his comics work (see that Pitchfork interview) as “organic” and therefore “completely tangent oriented”; he says, “I try to keep with what I am thinking about that day.” In this sense Maggots may be like a diary. Think about the book as, possibly, an organic record of a daily process. Is the book autobiographical? In this connection I recommend Jennifer News’ book Drawing from Life: The Art of the Journal.
