Oral Presentation Essay Topic: 2 Cool 4 School
Rigorously/academically explain the cool of an “X” of your choosing. Though cool is of course elastic and (sort of) subjective, point out how your X specifically manifests cool attributes. Does it embody qualities cited in the Wikipedia entry “Cool (aesthetic)” or other attempts to define cool? Who finds your X cool? (If you happen to personally find your X cool, avoid fan-blather. Strive for anthropological distance.) Who finds your X uncool? Why? Is your X’s cool “dated”— meaning, is it faddish/contemporary? Retro? “Futuristic”? Is your X’s cool mimicked? (Is energy/money spent to re-enact, perform, or “attain” its attributes?) Is that cool? Why or why not? Is your X’s cool marketed? Is that cool? Why or why not? Is your X’s cool “useful”? What might be some ideological implications of your X’s cool? Be sure to acknowledge any contradictions in your argument.
